After many combined years of experience fly fishing on the River Deveron as a family at Aswanley, we can recommend the following flies for salmon:
Cascades: classic summer salmon flies.Red and Orange Flamethrowers: a salmon fly for use throughout the season.Willie Gunn: one of the best spring salmon flies.Copper Ally Shrimp: probably the most successful of all of the Ally's Shrimp patterns.Stoats Tail: effective in both high and low water.
Fly size is dependent on water height but generally you are unlikely to need any salmon fly larger than size 8 and more frequently down to size 14 on the River Deveron. A handful of medium sized tubes in similar patterns for higher water might be useful.
Flies for sea trout
There is a small run of sea trout on the River Deveron, which can provide exciting sport on light tackle in the summer months. Traditional patterns such as Teal, Blue and Silver, Squirrel and Blue, Alexandra and Silver Butcher still do well.
Flies for brown trout
Throughout the River Deveron there is some very good trout fishing to be had. Trout to 5lb have been caught with good hatches of fly throughout the fishing season.
